Acne myths

Misconceptions and myths about acne are widespread. Since almost all people including teenagers and adults have experienced having acne, these myths were formulated due to mistaken ideas. And for sure all mistaken ideas can lead into making the situation worse. Here are some of the myths that you would want to know the facts behind so it would reduce the chance of making your acne problems worse.

One is "Poor hygiene causes acne". It does not mean that when you have acne, you have a poor hygiene. Washing your face frequently is just fine. It is actually recommended that the face be washed most of the time. It is not really the hygiene that mainly causes acne formation but it is the hormones. It is normal to have these imbalances most especially for women while on their menstrual period or menopausal period. But too much can cleaning and washing can also be harmful especially if you’re using strong facial cleansers or facial wash.

Two is "Popping or squeezing of the pimples can easily eliminate them". Imagine pinching that area and removing that whitish thing in it is one icky task. This myth is a bad idea to believe in. Why? You are not removing the acne but instead you are actually spreading it in your skin. So if you’re doing this in the past then you’d better stop it now. This can cause further infection and other skin problems.

Three is "Sunbathing to kill the bacteria causing the acne". It is true that sunlight can help you stop the bacteria because of the heat and it dries the wound or the inflamed part. But don’t forget, you are exposing your whole face or body in the sun. Prolonged exposure to sunlight without any protection can lead to drying of your skin. If your skin gets dry, automatic oil production would come in to moisturize your skin. Still, oily face also leads to acne formation.

Fourth is "Eating the wrong food leads to acne." If you enjoy french fries, hamburgers, peanuts and other fatty foods, you don’t have to worry too much about acne breakout. Our bodies react differently to the things we take in. There are people who eats these kind of food but do not get acne and pimples. However, once you did, you had better avoid them right there and then.

These are just some of the popular myths that you might have encountered. If you are not sure about a myth, it might be helpful to do your own research. Find some scientific background before you start believing in them. The more you know about acne the less harm you would get.
